How to Choose Magic Mirror Photo Booth Software
Updated November 2026 · 4 min read
Choose magic mirror software by how well it runs your camera, touch screen and printer together for four hours straight, then by its animations, print template tools and sharing options. Mirror software is often a one-time license with optional updates rather than a monthly plan, so read the license terms as carefully as the feature list.
We stay brand-neutral here because mirror software is often tied to the hardware you buy. Use this checklist to question any vendor and to test before a paid event.
Licensing and what's bundled
Expect anything from a single up-front license fee to roughly $100 a month (the calculator's default is $50). Before you pay, find out:
- Whether the license is tied to the mirror's built-in computer, and whether it transfers if you sell the mirror.
- What updates and support cost after the first year.
- Whether there are limits on events, templates or devices.
- Which camera and printer models are officially supported.
If the mirror comes with software, ask for the license in your name, in writing.
Also time how long it takes to build a new event: loading the template, choosing animations and writing the share message. You'll do that for every booking, usually a week before the event.
Camera, touch and printer control
The mirror software is really three control systems in one. Check each:
- Camera: controls a tethered DSLR or mirrorless body in manual mode, saves settings per event, and recovers on its own if the camera briefly disconnects.
- Touch: has a built-in calibration tool where you tap the four corners and center. Without one, a drifting touch layer becomes a night-long problem.
- Printer: sends to a dye-sub printer with the right print profile, supports the 2-inch cut for 2x6 strips, shows a live print count, and pauses cleanly for a media change.
Ask how it handles copies per session, so you can sell one print per session or unlimited prints from the same template.
Animations, voice prompts and print templates
Guests remember the mirror talking to them, so look at the animation library and voice prompts, and make sure volume is adjustable. An attract loop that runs between sessions does your selling for you.
For prints, check the template designer, or plan to design in a graphics tool and import. At 300 dpi, common canvases are:
| Layout | Canvas |
|---|---|
| 4x6 | 1200 x 1800 px |
| 2x6 strip | 600 x 1800 px per strip |
| 5x7 | 1500 x 2100 px |
| 6x8 | 1800 x 2400 px |
Keep a 0.125 inch (38 px) safe margin on every side. A guest book mode that prints a second copy for the album is worth having if you sell the scrapbook add-on.
Sharing, galleries and guest data
Prints are the star, but guests still want a digital copy. Check whether the software shares by QR, text and email from the mirror screen or a companion station, whether it queues shares when the connection drops, and whether it uploads to a gallery you can brand. Plan on your own hotspot either way.
If it collects guest emails or phone numbers, use a clear opt-in and follow your privacy statement.
Test plan before a paid event
- Run a 4-hour soak test in your shop with printing on, so heat and memory problems show up at home.
- Time a full session from tap to print. Under about 90 seconds keeps lines moving.
- Print 2x6 strips and check that the cut lands in the center.
- Close the software and reboot the computer mid-test. Does the event reopen without a login?
- Unplug and replug the camera and touch USB cables to see how the software recovers.
- Turn off automatic operating system updates on the mirror's computer and keep a keyboard and mouse in the kit.
Update camera and printer firmware only when recommended, and only after testing at a non-paid session.
Questions operators ask
Can I run iPad booth software on a magic mirror?
A mirror's built-in computer, DSLR and touch overlay need software built to control them. Confirm compatibility with the mirror seller before buying anything separately.
Do I need separate design software for print templates?
Only if the mirror software's designer is too limited for your style. Any graphics tool works as long as you export at the exact canvas sizes and keep the safe margin.
How often should I update mirror software?
Only when an update fixes something you need or supports new gear, and never in the week of an event. Install it on a quiet weekday and run a full test session with prints before the next booking.
Why do my prints look different from the screen?
Usually it's the print profile in the software or white balance that wasn't locked. Check both and print a test. See prints come out the wrong color.
What if the touch screen stops responding mid-event?
Re-run the touch calibration first, then re-seat the touch USB cable. See magic mirror touch screen not responding for the full fix.
